Civic and citizenship training (FCC)

The civic and citizenship training is the compulsory theoretical part for all civic service volunteers. It is completed by the practical training, the PSC1 (first aid training).

Educational objectives

To learn about concepts related to cultural diversity by sharing personal intercultural experiences;
To become aware of the interest and difficulties inherent in communication in an intercultural context;
Understanding the iceberg model and how our behaviour reveals our deepest values;
Be aware of your cultural profile and its influence on your behaviour;
Understanding how images, stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination work;
Practice active listening and develop empathy to communicate effectively;
Develop intercultural communication skills.

Programme

Day 1 - Culture, identity, bias in intercultural communication

MORNING :

– The notion of culture, its characteristics and mechanisms.

– Awareness of one’s cultural belonging, identity and ethnocentrism

AFTERNOON :

– Images, stereotypes and prejudices

– Link between images and their repercussions; discrimination

Day 2 - Intercultural communication

MORNING :

– Culture shock

– Critical incident method
AFTERNOON :

– The principle of decentration

– Penetrating the other’s frame of reference

– Negotiation tools

Expected results

Acquisition of basic notions of cultural anthropology and psychology of intercultural communication;
Acquisition of basic notions on culture shock (cf. decentration, critical incidents);
Ability to analyse the impact of cultural differences in non-verbal communication;
Introduction to methods and techniques of communication in an intercultural context.
